@experiencecoffinbay are back on the water next week after their winter break, just as oysters reach peak flavour in August and September 🦪

Their Farm & Bay Cruise travels 18km through pristine waterways to a remote oyster lease, where you can wade in and taste freshly shucked oysters straight from the source!

The experience also visits Brothers Island, home to sea lions and seals, with dolphins often seen alongside the boat. 🐬

Thanks to winter rainfall, this season’s oysters are especially exceptional, with incredible depth of flavour 😋

If these stone walls could talk, they would tell of a time when more than 20,000 sheep were shorn here each year. Nearly 100,000 fleeces were stored inside, awaiting the ketches that carried them from the Mt Dutton Bay Jetty to markets around the world. 🐑

Built by pioneer Price Maurice in 1875, the Mt Dutton Bay Woolshed stood at the heart of a vast pastoral lease stretching more than 100 miles along the coastline. Its adjoining jetty created a vital land-to-sea link, where wool bales were loaded onto ketches and carried to overseas markets.

Inside, reminders of this busy era remain. Timber trusses shipped from Oregon still bear their original markings and the historic Robinson double-box wool press once pressed more than 60,000 bales.

The woolshed later came close to demolition, but community support helped save it. State Heritage listed in 1984, the woolshed has been lovingly restored since 1992 and now offers a working museum, function facilities and a choice of hostel and cottage accommodation.

Next time you are exploring the Coffin Bay area, take the turn towards Mt Dutton Bay and experience a remarkable piece of Eyre Peninsula history. Be sure to check museum opening hours before visiting.
