Sustainable Tourism in Port Lincoln
Sustainability Statement
The Port Lincoln Visitor Information Centre is committed to operating in an environmentally responsible, culturally respectful, and community-focused way. Located on Barngarla Country, we embrace our responsibility to protect and promote the unique natural and cultural assets of the Eyre Peninsula, while supporting our local economy and engaging meaningfully with visitors and residents.
Our sustainability approach blends practical environmental actions with community education, cultural inclusion, and digital innovation to ensure we are contributing positively to the future of our region.
Our Sustainable Practices
-
Plastic Bag Free: In line with South Australia’s pioneering efforts in waste reduction, we are a plastic bag free centre. Reusable or recycled alternatives are offered to reduce single-use waste.
-
Digital Visitor Tools: We promote paperless travel by offering QR codes linking to our digital visitor guide, touring maps, and local attractions. Visitors can access updated, eco-friendly information at their fingertips, reducing the need for printed material.
-
Encouraging Online Bookings: To reduce printed paperwork and streamline service, we encourage visitors to book tours and accommodation online. Our team is always happy to assist with digital bookings, ensuring a smooth and sustainable travel experience.
-
Paper Waste Reduction: We minimise printing by offering electronic receipting and encouraging brochure returns and recycling. We also offer a brochure exchange and recycling, where visitors and locals can drop off or collect brochures, maps, and guides for reuse. Our 'take only what you need' approach helps reduce paper consumption while keeping information in circulation.
-
Upcycled Souvenir Bags: Superseded town maps are given a second life as unique, reusable souvenir bags—reducing waste and delighting visitors with a meaningful memento.
-
Locally Sourced and Eco-Friendly Products: We showcase products made on the Eyre Peninsula, including souvenirs crafted from recycled materials. This supports local makers and reduces environmental impact from transport.
-
First Nations Products: Our shop proudly features authentic creations by local First Nations artists and makers. Supporting these products promotes cultural sustainability, economic inclusion, and respect for Country.
-
Recycling and Green Waste: We actively recycle packaging materials and manage organic waste to reduce our landfill contribution.
-
Tourism Education for Local Schools: We work with local primary schools to provide fun and educational experiences about tourism in Port Lincoln. These programs help students understand the importance of our local tourism industry, environmental care, and pride of place.
Together for a Sustainable Future
Sustainability at our Visitor Information Centre is about more than reducing waste—it’s about nurturing a connected and conscious community. From using a QR code to access a digital map, to supporting First Nations creators or learning about local tourism at school, every action contributes to a thriving, sustainable Port Lincoln.
